Manipur is one of the hill states in the northeastern part of India. It came under the British rule in 1891. After the independence of India in 1947,the then princely state of Manipur was merged with Indian Union and was placed under a Chief Commissioner in 1949.
A committee to advise the Chief Commissioner was formed afterwards. This was replaced in 1957 by a Territorial Council of 30 elected members and 2 nominated members. Later, a legislative assembly was established under the Union Territory Act of 1963. The territory became a full-fledged state on the 21st January 1972.
