Few universities have a student profile as dynamic and diverse as UNISA’s, whether seen from the point of view of race, gender, age, nationality or occupational status. Traditionally, UNISA's main target market has been adults, now the Institution is attracting a growing number of young people aged 24 and younger. In terms of race and gender, UNISA's student profile increasingly reflects South African demographics. Women currently account for slightly more than 55% of total registrations, while black students (Africans, Coloureds and Indians) make up 73%. Geographically, South Africa continues to be the main source of registrations, but UNISA is attracting growing numbers of students from outside the country's borders as a result of the University's strengthened African orientation. Although UNISA's fees are at least 50% lower than the fees generally charged by residential universities, the institution has experienced an increase in the number of academically capable students facing financial hardship. Finally, as a distance education provider, UNISA is well placed to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Just over 1 000 of these students are currently enrolled with Unisa, of whom more than a quarter have visual disabilities. More detail... |
